Many thanks to all of you for the great comments. Linda, maybe the title of the picture is confusing. These are large chestnut trees in June, just before flowering. The chestnuts are ripe in October and are then picked up (yum!). Jenny, I didn't use masking fluid in this one, but painted from light to dark. I sketched the larger leaves in the foreground in pencil, as well as four or five tree trunks.
