    I've always been drawn to strong tonal values. That how life looks to me, so it's how I aim to depict it.
    Also drawn by the drama and atmospherics of nature.
    Rowland Hilder of course used black, to very good effect. This painting was done with 4 colours, and French Ultra and Burnt Umber are the main ones, and those mostly providing the strong dark. The others (for the sake of completion!) were Raw Umber and Winsor Blue red shade.

  • thanks for the info on the colours used. I like gutsy water colour and these two paintings have that in abundance. Using raw umber as the yellow element works very well
