Ellies in the woods

Wooden Ellies

This is gorgeous, Shelagh. It has a wonderful tranquillity to it, which fits the Ellie's nature. Nice to see some of the larch pattern in the background. The little elephant, still curious to its surroundings while following mum.

Our Sylvia Evans will love this: she likes big bottoms! Interested in your surface material - I've never painted on larch: did you cut it and prepare it yourself, or buy from a supplier, I wonder?

Thanks both for your comments and observations, much appreciated. And what beautiful bottoms they are. Yes it does have that tranquil feel. As for the larch, it was sourced for me by a friend up in Scotland who makes beautiful harps. He got me four A3 (ish) sized pieces, then smoothed them down a little I recall, whilst protecting the integrity and keeping the waney edges. I then just added a coating of clear gesso before applying the modeling paste and acrylic paint. I've done a couple now and love what it brings to the composition, particularly strategically incorporating the knots - in this one, although not too clear, it was one of the ellie's feet.

This was painted on a beautiful piece of waney-edge larch. Interesting to do and making it almost 3D with textured paint. Creating the ellies' wrinkles was great fun and the colours were chosen to fit in with a newly decorated room. I found painting on this type of surface very interesting and quite forgiving.
