I’ve seen the programmes you refer to Lew, judging for the RA exhibition and you describe it to a T! It’s a depressing process. I’ve also seen the exhibition a couple of times and wasn’t impressed at the way it’s hung, with the main body of work crammed in floor to ceiling, whilst the big names have more than enough space. You show it very well!

Yes, sad isn't it … but like this a lot!

Thank you for your comments Tessa and Heather. There seems to be a plethora of 'judging' shows on TV about all manner of things. Usually there's at least one mean judge. They must think it makes good TV. Don't like 'em. I watch the art shows for the art.

Lewis, you’ve summed it up well - I also saw that programme and wondered how they could possibly make a proper assessment of each painting from the ‘conveyor belt’ of work that sped past - I remember a pet portrait was chosen because one of the selectors was fond of that particular breed of dog!

A different "air" to this one Lewis. It all boils down to beauty being in the eye of the beholder and , ultimately , a personal preference - be it mouse or mastiff. However , I will continue to take pleasure from your portfolio . Keep 'em coming.

Thank you for your generous comment Mike. I remember the dog quote, Jenny. Possibly just a flip remark, but it hardly fills you with confidence about the judging...find out if a judge likes custard tarts and paint some custard tarts. I'm being flip now, I'm sure most judges do the best they can, but surely their personal preferences must prevail.

Great comment but my tenpennyworth is that tv art shows tend to dumb down rather than than raising standards but what do I know!

How true is this Lewis. Your super drawing sums up the whole selection process so well. That's the way I see it though some might disagree. Such competitions aren't for me either.

This site is about your art Lew, and at that you are a maestro.

Indeed, Lewis and Tessa..so very depressing, this typical scene, and an impossible task. Great stylish picture as ever from you, Lewis!

Great sketch Lew, just about sums it all up!!

Brilliant, Lew, and wonderfully satirical. Once you're in the club everything's fine, but how to get in?!! Bri

Thanks again to all who've commented. Much appreciated.

Yes, superb. I saw the programme as well and this is it. 1000s of works whizzing by.

I find myself humming that tune, 'it's all about the money' :)

Brilliant Lew, just about sums it up perfectly.

Love your concepts Lewis, beautifully executed, wonder which one is the meanest judge here :-)

Thank you Gudrun, Louise, Robert and Anjana, for your welcome comments.

Lewis, you are a genius. I just love everything you post. The colours here are gorgeous too.

Thank you Jennifer for your very kind comment.

A pic I've been going to do for some time, it was better in my head than on paper. Prompted by the TV shows about the RA's annual competition, in which a river of art flows briskly past a group of judges. They have an impossible task. But I feel for the artists who watch the show and see their work scoot past the judges with barely a glance. (Odd that on the day I post this, I get an email from POL reminding us about TALP...purely coincidental, I assure you. It's not for me.)

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
