Fab made up seen Paul. Aww your boats. Your always good at them 😊

It's a beautifully painted scene Paul, excellent work.

Another good one Dixie, especially like the complex sails.

Faye, Denise and Tessa thank you for your comment they are much appreciated. I wish I could have obtained a better photo as this one seem a bit blurry.

Beautiful detail Paul, very impressed that you did this from imagination.

Very good Paul, like the colour palette

Beautifully done, Paul - especially the graceful sails!

Another of your very good "boat" paintings. Always love your paintings of marine scenes!

Thanks for all the info you give with your paintings Paul. Another good one.

Thank you Carrie, Heather, Anne , David and Chris for your very kind comments. I do love maritime art , it only in the last few months thst I have done sailing ships. Unfortunately I get quite rude comments from my eldest daughter who hates boat paintings for some reason . I think the others just don’t care what’s painted unless it’s something they have a keen interest in .

A really well painted picture which shows excellent knowledge of sailing vessels...

Well done Paul. Nice work.

Another very good marine painting Paul, the sails especially very good. Your treatment of the "tip" cannot have been easy but it works.

That’s really good Paul, I love your work with the sails

John, Jim, Spenser , Richard and Neil thanks for taking the time to look and comment, your comments are appreciated. I think is the sails are not right the whole thing looks wrong , it a recent interest and I’m still in the learning process . The tip wax relatively easy Richard as case of painting details then a wet brush with clean water to lift out the colours a little.

Good one Paul, really like the sail & rigging work.

Thank you Brian for taking the time to look and comment, it’s much appreciated.

I always like your boat paintings Paul. Another good one.

George and David many thanks to you both for taking the time to look and comment.

This takes me back a few years Paul, especially the description of the rock and the Lavanta. Smashing painting.

Thank you Fiona, I thought you would recall the Levanter, anyone who has spent time in Gib will know how they feel in the town . I have been upper rock a few time when one was in full flow , absolutely soaking wet , ahh the good old days. You would have had your share at Calpe I bet .

Most definitely Paul. Living at Calpe was like being in a full blown ‘pea souper’ sometimes. Great views over the harbour and moles……mmmm great days. Went back there in 2005 and had planned to return last year but covid happened…..hope to go in the next year, or two.

I will keep my fingers crossed that you get there . Unfortunately due to health reason I would nit be able to go back now, apart from Kinloss it was my favourite posting including all the detachments to HK etc.

A 23x32 cm watercolour, made up scene using images and knowledge of sailing ships I have added in the background the tip of Gibraltar, now called Europa Point. I have deliberately smudged the top of the Rock to represent the Lavant, a mist caused by the cooler wind hitting the hot rock, it looks like it’s a smoking chimney or a big fire. On the Western side of the the Rock it’s very muggy and hot.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
