An Honest Man

Oh my David, the portrait is very good but I would take issue with the title but that's politics for you!

Thanks Heather.. dyed in the wool socialist I'm afraid ;-)

Very good likeness David, I’m sure he is honest in his views but a bit too far left for me.

Great painting, abstract title 😉

I’m not too keen on ‘black’ backgrounds in general, unless you’re working in the style of say Caravaggio, decent enough portrait of a loser with ambition well above his ability!

I didn't quite mean for this portrait to become quite so..er.. Triggering with some.. It's a painting plain and simple. Maybe I should do a Boris just to even things out lol!

Let us leave the politics aside - I too have tried to paint JC, and mine don't (I've had several tries!) look like yours, in the sense that the style is different. Like me, you've used photographs as your reference; I wonder if, also like me, you find it perishing difficult? It's the mouth - well, it so often is in portraits - that principally confused me, but Mr C does have a very characteristic head shape: I think yours is more accurate than mine (I also think I thought about it too much: my first sketch was a lot more accurate than later efforts). I know one thing - I never want to work from photos again!

Hi Robert.. Yeah, I know what you mean! Frustrating would be a good word.. I looked at yours and you have a much looser style than me which is something I am working on as my style is very tight and obsessed with realism.. At the end of the day I just really liked the pose!

This is a very good portrait David, I like the black background and the unfinished area. Like you, I wish I could be a little looser in my paintings but my “ style” keeps creeping in😁.

About the Artist
David McCarroll

I have been painting for 5 years now. My father was a really good marine artist but my thing is portraiture. I almost always use oils but also like pastels and charcoal. I prefer realism but would like to develop a looser style.. Every painting is a new lesson for me and I really enjoy the journey.
