I showed it to the recipient this morning, to agree on matt/satin/or gloss varnish (my neighbour - son of the man in the picture), and he had a few tears! 
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

It does remind you that so many service personnel, of all nations, were just boys, and occasionally girls, fighting in old men's wars ...  And I'm sure you know this, but if it's oil, don't go varnishing it yet - when the time comes, I think a satin varnish would work well.

It's acrylic, and we've gone for a satin varnish. I've never tried oils (yet....). Though I imagine I would get high on the smell in my pokey little art cupboard!
