Good to see Martin Taylor and his work on here, and his experience of the day.
I watched the winner’s prize/challenge last night and enjoyed it , perhaps as much for the wonderful scenery of Snowdonia as for the painting! It was a tough ask to chose one view from such a beautiful area. I thought in the end she did well with the work produced and I was interested to see some of her other paintings of jazz musicians at the beginning.
Overall I’ve enjoyed the series and no doubt will watch it again. It has its limitations as all of these formulaic series do, but it’s always good to see painting on the box which doesn’t involve so called celebrities. I agree that they don’t show enough serious painting and that there’s too much chat, but pretty good overall.

So far, each winner has shown to have a depth which wasn't obvious to me during the competitions - this applies to the portrait as well as the landscape comp. They also seem to have wonderful studios to work in. I did like Ophelia's piece, I thought it encapsulated a lot of what she'd seen. I think she seemed calm in the face of making what was a difficult choice. Will we ever be satisfied with any art programme? Probably not, but I look forward to watching any programme relating to art, this one has enough to hold my interest.

I looked to see what’s on as a follow up to this, and there’s a new short series starting this evening- Landscape Artist of the Year Canada, which will at least give us some different landscape options. It’s introduced by a lady who apparently is a presenter and actress, presumably not an artist. It doesn’t mention judges but I shall watch it and find out.
Sky Arts 8pm tonight.

It was a great experience in many ways, there's so much I could tell folk about it. I learnt how they make a programme. You don't have on influence over any of it. There was some great footage which never got aired. I hardly met any of the judges. Stephen Mangam was really engaging and good fun as was Joan. I sold the painting for good money considering it was four hours work. There are so many ways you could approach this, you just have to go with it, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Thanks Martin for the insight. Obviously we only really see a potted version of the day on tv. I remember someone else writing the story of her very long and tiring day filming the show, but also said she enjoyed it.
And so to the Canadian version, be careful what you wish for! Must admit I was tempted to turn the sound down at one point.
Somehow I thought they might have varied the formula a little, so was rather disappointed and it felt like the UK version on steroids!
I did quite like the work of the lady who won, and felt the judges by their comments, wanted a fairly literal translation of the view. In general I thought the standard pretty poor.
What did anyone else think!? Will you watch again?

I won't watch Sky, given the pestilent company and the purulent patriarch who owns it. Which is a sacrifice for me, since I used to follow Formula 1 until Murdoch nicked it.
So I shan't see these things. Whether this is a loss or a gain I cannot know. But in general, 'arts' television has always struck me as a reduction of art to competition - with which it has or should have nothing to do. Probably my loss, but there it is.

However....I will watch it again next week, if only to see if the level improves. Unlike "our programme" we didn't get any insight into the planning of the paintings either. Strange....
