I'm not so sure that you need to know much about abstracts to enjoy them. After all representational art is enjoyed by millions who know little if anything about it.
As for painting abstracts just think of patterns, composition, balance, palette as you do with other forms of art and then simply create patterns - okay that's an over-simplification but a great way to get your mindset focused. Yes it does take practice as does any form of art but it is so liberating and refreshing after painting the predictable fare which can become so so boring. And I paint in both genres.
