Traditional Woodcuts with Paul Riley

Paul Riley is well known for his watercolour paintings but Paul is also a very accomplished printmaker. Join Paul for this 3 day course at Coombe Farm Studios in South Devon. Wood Cuts have a very long and fascinating tradition going back to early Japanese and Christian forms of illustration. Paul has been exploring the oriental methods using watercolour printing as opposed to them more usual oil based ink method, which will be demonstrated on this course. The course will include the cutting of the block using a variety of knives and gouges. Explanation of the safe use of the tools and their sharpening will be given. Design ideas will be developed and transferred to the block. Finally printing using old methods in a new way will demonstrate the versatility of this medium. Advice will also be given remounting and presenting the final image. This exciting course is suitable for both beginners and experienced alike.
