Painting, print making and ceramic sculpture will come together to explore our experiences and questions about life: Memories, hopes, despairs, celebrations...questions. A truly beautiful, thought provoking exhibition. ‘Three seemingly disparate artists have come together to share a space for Open Studios. However, upon further investigation, Iona Calvert, Katie Braida and Wendy Tate appear to be using their artistic talents to explore very similar themes: the experience and fragility of life expressed through the qualities of their chosen medium. Iona spends hours working with paper thin porcelain, lovingly willing it to survive the fire. Katie caresses, through a process of burnishing, pressing, scraping, her pieces, until they begin to tell the story of her memories and experiences. Wendy uses the figure and landscape in painting and photography, to try and make sense of and become one with the world around her. Having had a breast cancer diagnosis last year, and spending months not making work, she has enjoyed the challenge of making a new body of work. ‘I am known primarily for painting the nude, but I have enjoyed painting the area that I live in and exploring different ways in which to depict its beauty and contradictions’ They will be exhibiting at St James community Arts Centre, corner of Seamer and Valley Road.Scarborough 9-10, 16-17 June, 10.30 – 5.30pm Tea, coffees and Cakes will be on sale from the resident Cockleshell cafe Gallery can also be viewed by appointment during the week. www.wendytate-artist.co.uk for further information and directions
