JDP 16 Special Event, Drawing in Competition: A Symposium

Held during the final week of The Edge’s presentation of the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016, this special afternoon looks at definitions of drawing in contemporary scenarios such as JDP via radical and traditional examples.

Session one is a public lecture and ‘in conversation’ with artist and writer DEANNA PETHERBRIDGE, a significant contributor and commentator in the field, who since the 1960s has pioneered critical thinking on drawing and its place in art and architecture. Author of the important and original book The Primacy of Drawing, a retrospective of pen and ink drawings from Petherbridge’s 45 year career opens at the Whitworth, Manchester in December. Session two is a panel talk including JDP16 First Prize winner SOLVEIG SETTEMSDAL and TAMARIN NORWOOD, an artist who examines gesture and pictorial figuration in drawing and writing and like Settemsdal works with video and sculptural installation. Symposium hosted by Professor ANITA TAYLOR (Dean of Bath School of Art & Design, Bath Spa and JDP co-founder) and JAMIE EASTMAN (Director of Arts, University of Bath). Tea and coffee is included in the ticket price. SCHEDULE 2pm: Introduction from Anita Taylor (Co-founder of JDP, Dean of Bath School of Art & Design, Drawing Projects UK) 2.15pm – 3.30: Session 1.
