Is anyone else afraid of open spaces in waterclour ?

I have been struggling with watercolour painting for ever. I feel that I can't quite bring myself to use the paints and the brush freely. No idea what I am scared of. It used to be the thought of a disasterous result and therefor a waste of paint and expensive paper- I can happily practice thumbnail efforts. However I have just inherited a whole load of materials and I'm still just plain scared. It is very frustrating: I either create wishy washy nondescript flat nonesense or muddy overworked messes. I want to be creating beautiful clean translucent wonders!!!! Then I had the idea of using some of my other crafty interests to help. Recently learned how to felt using wet and needle methods. So I am now in the middle of creating a picture using felting wool. This gives me the fiddle factor that I love when using colour pencils to do detail drawings, but it forces me to keep the picture simple (and the colours, otherwise I would need hundreds of £s worth of wool!). So far I am pleased with what is happening but am just about to start on a piece where I need a big area of simple pure colour and as you can see I am blogging instead of getting down to it....... No doubt there will be chores needing done around the house next and .......... any advice on conquering the fear of the open spaces?
