Final Exhibition!

After 5 weeks of preparation and hard work the end of year final exhibition is finally up! It only feels like yesterday that I started my Art and design course back in September. The exhibition was based around a trip we had to The Powell Cotton Museum at Quex Park, which I highly recommend going to, the grounds of the museum are vast and beautiful, the actual museum is a collection of taxidermy animals the Percy Powell Cotton collected around the 1920s from Africa and shipped them back to the UK, he did this to educate people who were less fortunate than himself to travel to Africa and see these animals. On this trip many people had mixed feelings about it which was to be expected but personally I found it fascinating. The title of my final display was called Print Works because at the museum the patterns and textures of the animals and their furs really caught my eye, I also thought this would be a very broad topic and I would be able to experiment with various different mediums which I really enjoy doing. After a lot of experimentation with lino printing, stencilling and drawing I had come up with a print idea which I wanted to use for my final outcome which would be shown in the exhibition. I decided to design two dresses, a wall hanging and some pillows. This did seem like a lot at first but once I had printed my pattern onto fabric by using a stencil and a spray gun, once I got into the swing of things making everything just seemed to fall into place! Now the real dilemma was how am I going to set this up in the exhibition! After staring at a blank wall for a longer time than I’d like to admit I had finally come up with a layout that I was happy with. I decided to hang my dresses quite high up on my wall space which proved to be a lot difficult than I had expected! After a long day of setting up everything I am very happy with the way my pieces worked together and also how they look next to everyone else’s. It was fascinating seeing everyone’s work all up together and how broad the work was given the fact that all our ideas started at the Powell Cotton museum. I guess it goes to show how creative we can be and how different everyone’s ideas are and also how we all interpret things in different ways. This shows how the creative mind can flourish and expand from one tiny detail of the museum that might have inspired them and then created a whole final outcome weather that be a film or a painting there is no end to the creative possibilities that could inspire you.
