A pictorial alphabet of favourite places around England – U for Upper Hulme
A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England
Upper Hulme is a hamlet between Leek and Buxton, at the Eastern end of the Roaches (see earlier blog), and on the edge of the Peak District. It consists of a scattering of sandstone cottages around a redundant 17th century mill. Above Upper Hulme, Ramshaw Rocks form the last dramatic outcrop in the Roaches range, looming over the main Leek-Buxton road, as shown in my painting. The Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks attract walkers and climbers in sufficient numbers to maintain two pubs and a tearoom, which the size of the hamlet can’t justify alone.
