Well, N is the first letter where I can find nothing I’ve sketched or painted to represent it. BUT I do have an awful lot of sketches or paintings without a specific location noted, so N is for Nowhere in particular ! The painting shown is from a view glimpsed while driving on the moors, and is typical of these sketches and paintings, mostly remote or moorland country, where I haven’t added a location note. This one was photographed by stopping the car, flicking the flashers, and shooting a couple of quick photos before driving off. A lay-by would have been nice but I have written a rule of moorland painting, from frustrating experience. It’s not so bad when walking, but trying to find a moorland subject while driving is subject to SLOMP – Sod’s Law of Moorland Painting, which states: Wherever you see a perfect landscape from the car there won’t be anywhere safe to park for another 3 miles and wherever you do find a lay-by to park, there won’t be an inspiring view for 3 miles! A SLOMP morning is when I’ve spent more time driving around than sketching. Sometimes all I get is a new composition for hills and a rainy sky.
