Jonathan Smith

Biography

I am a self-taught oil painter from the Yorkshire Dales. My other career as a dry-stone waller has afforded me the opportunity to sketch and photograph the wonderful Dales in all their glory. My main aim is to convey my emotional response to a landscape through the medium of my art. Using tone and hue, I want to recreate the feelings I had for the view that I put on canvas and, hopefully, pass them in to the viewer. This requires control and care. Taking a lead from the Barbizon painters of 19thC France, I work to convey landscape in an envelope of light. This is, I feel, a delicate skill that has been discarded and one that that only oil painting can deliver.
