Mike Rollins

Biography

Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, I grew up surrounded by the rugged moorlands and grit-stone walls of the South Pennines. Subconsciously, my eye has been coloured ever since by this legacy of romantic ruins and stark views. Trained as a scenic designer, I often convey my chosen subject as though it were a stage set, upon which I invite the viewer to project his, or her, own imaginings. I rarely paint a landscape exactly as I find it, preferring to alter weather and lighting to that which I believe best suits its character and sense of place. This reflects what I feel at that moment and reveals my response to the location.
