Denis Pickles

Biography

I’ve been drawing and painting for a long, long time. The first picture I have still in my possession is dated November 1939 and 83 years on I’m still at it! Keen on art at school and would have dearly liked a job with an art connection- I had hoped to get into architecture, but it did not happen. I made my career in local government and only after retirement did I begin to concentrate my spare time on painting. It was then that I spent time with eminent painters here in the Uk and in America trying to learn how to be a better artist. Perhaps I did? Perhaps not, but I made a good many lifelong friends. I’ve painted in locations all over Europe, in North America, South Africa much preferring to paint plein air than indoors. In fact I have filled many sketchbooks with pen and wash paintings on my travels, many of which were used to illustrate the book I published in 2018 titled ‘Pages from my Pictorial Journals’.
