Dan Smith

Biography

My art practice focuses on nostalgic food items, specifically the foods items that are traditionally found on school dinner menus and within working class homes across Britain. These foods are also regionally specific, and relate to a northern upbringing in my hometown of Leigh. My method combines contemporary and traditional painting techniques. The use of bold and direct colour application refers to contemporary painting practice, and a use of glazes refers to traditional old master techniques. My use of mark marking gives the finished paintings a semi-realistic appearance. The quality of marks result in the disintegration of subject matter when viewed up close. Recently graduated with a first class honours degree in fine art from the University of Central Lancashire and also was awarded the Lancashire Arts Festival Fine Art Award 2018.
