Workshop: Painting in Oils

Workshop: Painting in Oils

I was on the receiving end of this workshop a couple of weekends ago, given by Richard Towers at the Millennium Gallery, and thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of using oils for for the first time since my childhood, after working under the comparative planning constraints of watercolour for 25 years

I went to confirm my suspicions that I have been missing a great deal in not trying oils for 50 years, and so it proved. If I can only find space and time it's an area I'd love to go into. It's subtle and encourages observation and understated representation in a different way to watercolour. Plus the obvious freedoms of doing what you want, when you want and getting rid of the whole lot if you're losing it; a whole new world.

You’re so right Brian! I love oils but many people are afraid to even try them, a shame because they don’t know what they’re missing. I could probably say the same about watercolours, but don’t think I have enough years left in me to tackle them in any depth! Good luck with the oils. Are you using traditional or water soluble?
