Editing your photographs part 2

It appears that in this blog feature I can upload only one image per entry. Therefore I will have to make this in four parts. Looking at the raw image, t’s not too bad but obviously needs cropping. The picture here shows the cropped photo. with the Photoshop Levels dialogue box for the image. The histogram represents the distribution of the image pixels across the photo, the 256 levels (zero is the first, so 0—255) are on the horizontal axis at the bottom. Note the three triangle-arrows; black (0) at the left and white (255) at the right. The middle arrow can be ignored for our purposes here. Looking at the distribution of the histogram we can see that there are no pixels at the left side and no pixels at the right side. This means that there are no true blacks or whites in this image, which is why it looks a little flat and lacking contrast. (NB: I picked this image because it shows this clearly, it’s not always so clear-cut).
