Griffin Art Prize Announces 2016 Winner

Serbian Fine Art graduate Ana Milenkovic has been chosen from a shortlist of six of the UK’s most exciting emerging artists to win Griffin Art Prize 2016.

Griffin Gallery director Rebecca Pelly-Fry announced Serbian artist Ana Milenkovic as the winner, who will receive a bespoke three-month studio residency at Griffin Gallery starting next year, and will receive a supply of artist materials from Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris. As part of the residency programme Milenkovic will be in the unique position of seeking advice from paint chemists at Winsor & Newton and Liquitex, whilst experimenting with new artist materials suited to their practice. The work of the winner and other shortlisted artists will be exhibited at the Griffin Gallery for six weeks 24th November to 23rd December.

Wimbledon art school graduate Ana Milenkovic works across assemblage, collage and photography, often creating chaotic and disturbing images in the process. She completed her BA and MA Fine Art in Serbia and finished her MFA at Wimbledon College of Art in 2014, and has since won the prestigious Clifford Chance Sculpture Award.

Ana Milenkovic, Griffin Art Prize 2016 winner said, 'I’m hugely honoured to have won this prize. This was a huge surprise for me, the best part of this process was working alongside five other exceptionally talented artists. This is a huge boost of confidence for me to keep working on my practice and develop as an artist. I’m really looking forward to starting the residency.'

Griffin Gallery Director, Becca Pelly-Fry said, 'The entries for this year’s Griffin Art Prize were of a particularly high standard, resulting in a highly varied shortlist encompassing detailed drawings, large scale digital works, sculpture and installation. We are really looking at the expanded field of painting here, and the shortlist has a currency to it that reflects contemporary concerns of emerging artists, in the UK and beyond. It’s exciting to see the work coming in each year and this year we are particularly proud to be showing these six talented young artists. The judges eventually agreed on Ana as this year’s winner because of the exemplary quality of her painting. She demonstrates great intelligence and far reaching references in her work, and promises to be an extremely exciting resident at Griffin Gallery.'
