An established botanical artist from Devon is looking forward to a busy summer. Susan Thomson from Topsham near Exeter will be showing her work at the Topsham Art Group Summer Exhibition at Topsham Primary School from July 31to August 20. “I will then be opening my studio at 13 Greatwood Terrace, Topsham EX3 0EB for Devon Open Studios from September 5 to September 20,” says Susan. Then from September 10 to September 29 her work will be shown in The Art of Pollination, an exhibition of botanical art by the Bath Society of Botanical Artists. This exhibition will be held at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, 16 to 18 Queens Square, Bath, BA1 2HN. Susan trained as a graphic artist and worked in advertising before studying botanical drawing and watercolour painting at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. "Having always been interested in plants this was a wonderful opportunity to learn about plants and paint wonderful specimens straight from the botanic gardens," says Susan. "I specialise in botanical illustration and since moving to Devon I have added birds to my portfolio, inspired by the local bird sanctuaries. My painting incorporates detailed work as well as a more personal freer style and I experiment with print making and silk painting to create less controlled pieces." Susan regularly exhibits around the UK, gives botanical workshops locally and exhibits and teaches watercolour workshops in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She has work in private collections in Dubai, America, Ireland and the UK.
