  • Thank you Fiona, I very much admire John Piper's work although any similarity was unintentional. Alan

  • thanks for your comments on my work Alan - I can see exactly why you'd refer me to this - i'm very happy to have the connection! I've also done a lot of sgraffito work in the past and this reminds me of that - very nice - good to meet you!

  • Alan I'm still having problems with my server so I will post my email here;

    Alan,
    it was so kind of you to highlight one of my paintings and give me a fair and honest opinion. I rely on the gallery to help me along my painting pathway, but as you can imagine, you don't always get helpful feedback ( I mean that in the nicest possible way, of course and I'm possibly guilty of it myself.)
    so, it is very refreshing to get good, honest crit.

    Yes, I'm also guilty of 'doing myself down', can't help it because more often than not, not one of my pictures ( you notice I don't call them paintings!) turns out how I see it in my head, but I also know I'm not alone in that department.

    It's very kind of you to offer assistance and I appreciate that very much, could I ask, if I post a picture on the gallery, give it your best shot!! You won't offend me at all, I'm not going to improve if I carry on painting in the same way and not rectifying mistakes....especially if they are silly mistakes.

    Many thanks once again Alan, very kind of you to take the time and trouble.

    Regards
    Fiona

  • Thank you for that, Fiona. Yes it is difficult for people to be totally honest about any of our work, for the obvious reason of offending us, but I take your point that you need objective criticism in order to improve. That's what life was like for 5 years at art college, the tutor's ripped you to bits on occasion but also praised you which made it worthwhile. I will be giving you more objective criticism in future, but I have praised some of your work and that was genuine worthy praise.

    I don't think that it matters a damn if your paintings (and we will call them paintings from now on, won't we) don't turn out as you initially visualised them, I'm sure mine don't but as long as you enjoyed painting them, to me, that's everything. I don't paint anything with a view to pleasing other people either, that's always secondary which is why I push the boundaries at times knowing that it will invoke comment! - and be noticed...

    So yes, keep it going, you are doing well and no more negative thought's. But you do know that if I gave you a scathing report I would be vilified by the other's, you have a large following and they obviously like you. That won't deter me though.

    Just a quick mention that I have a story going in to the e-newsletter this month, a bit of nonsense of course, but look out for it. Also the online editor has asked me to do a step-by-step painting feature with pics for the following month, well pleased.

    I've always liked this quote, have a read of it, and I think it sums up a lot of things:

    ''The artist gazes upon a reality and creates his own impression. The viewer gazes upon that impression and creates his own reality''

    Best wishes, Alan

  • Alan, I thought my server problem was fixed and I've just spent 30mins replying to your comment below, and it still won't go to your address. I'm sending to other addresses okay now...? Not to worry, it was mainly nonsense but I really like your quote, it gave me a eureka moment! It doesn't really matter what I paint.....it will always translate a different story to the viewer. Takes the pressure off!
