  • I find this very appealing Avril. The textures you have achieved in this painting are just smashing. The colours are gorgeous. This is so typically French. I love it.

  • Intriguing subject. What is behind the little grill? Like the battered appearance. Agree with Jeanette, colours and texture

  • Love your palette, and what a beautiful subject, very well done!

  • Thank you Jeannette, Angela and Lesley for your encouraging comments. I found the stonework difficult as to start with I made it too obvious. There are so many fantastic doors and doorways in the old towns of Provence - I have loads more photos but wonder if it's not repetitive always doing a similar subject. My hubby says a psychologist would no doubt have some insight........!

  • Hi Avril. I love the subtelty of your colours and the way you have used the watercolours here. I have answered your question on my snow scene painting on my portfolio. Will be browsing the rest of this portfolio. I love this and no, I never tire of doorways, especially French ones. I have an old cottage door where a cat is sat on the step and inside the doorway are all sorts of french nick-knacks hanging on the householder's wall............................I must paint it one day!!! • Lovely painting - and I have been there! We took the children there to the swimming pool every day on one of our French holidays. Wonderfully subtle colours and real feeling of the age of the building. Very nice work.

  • This is great - not least the way the door planks have rotted exposing the structure. I suspect you have a 'thing' about doorways similar to mine about mountains. Indeed, let's leave the psychologists out of it: no doubt sinister stuff!
