David A Hall

Biography

My creative practice is centred on paint media and photography (analogue and digital). Based in Norwich for many years, but with family roots in the seascapes of the Sussex and Norfolk coasts, I am drawn to the flux between sea and land, and the traces of historical structures - decaying mooring structures, wooden sea defences and remnants of the maritime heritage - in this liminal environment. The exploration of these spaces provides a key focus for my creative work, whilst memory - personal, family and historical - is the other related and developing strand. My paintings are increasingly formed of numerous paint washes applied by rollers, palette knives, rags and a variety of brushes, perhaps with some later impasto paint, before the layers are partially cut back / blended / removed with various implements, as I intuitively search for and develop a way of working with materials that reflects the subject matter - just as the tides cover and reveal so the canvas hides and / or reveals, perhaps exposing a lost fragment that has been painted over at some point.
