I was intrigued by what appeared to be 'cultural determinism' in the actions of Japanese tourists in photographs I took in Pisa. The tourists shown here (taken from from a number of photos) were doing what everyone seems to do there, ie. posing for a photograph in which they appear to be holding up the leaning tower. What I found interesting was that many of the postures they adopted were strongly suggestive of tai chi and others (like the lady standing on the left) seemed to suggest a formal Oriental greeting.
There is, however, a long way to go with this painting but my intention (at the moment) is to try to develop visual references to both oriental and modern western painting styles/techniques using line and flat, or perhaps(?) atmospheric areas of colour/texture, alongside fully-modelled figures.
