Aberavon Beach - Line and Wash

Aberavon Beach - Line and Wash

First attempts at really starting to get to grips with adding colour to my ink sketches.

I’ve recently been off work for two months. Then I returned to work just last Thursday. I’m a teacher in a school in South Wales. On Friday in passing I saw the Head of Art, who asked me how I was doing, and then said that he liked some of the sketches I’ve recently been posting on Facebook. He encouraged me to put some colour on them, to which I replied that I’ve been struggling with line and wash and with watercolour in general. Still, it certainly planted a seed. On Saturday morning I took my sketchbook and pens out, and the results you can see in my last two posts. I couldn’t help thinking about how I’d bottled out of trying to make a line and wash sketch of some highly appropriate scenes. I resolved that I’d screw my courage to the sticking post and go back on the Sunday and take my paints – weather permitting. I did go, but not without some preparation. I watched several tutorials on Youtube, just to give me a rough idea of basic technique in order to start. Here’s the first I made. I like it, and the colours are better done than my previous attempts. However on reflection it is a little over-drawn.

Terrific, I think this scene needs drawing; to have simplified it too much would have detracted from the actual place. Great job. I try to sketch on a post card every day ....I have completed 2 :)

Good stuff David, give yourself a gold star!

Thanks Ibolya! I currently fill about two sketchbooks a month, but the sketches are mostly just ink - I have to develop my confidence with line and wash.

That's really lovely, David. I hope you have the courage to do this on a regular basis, it's such fun!
